How a 30 Day Challenge Produced Not 1, But 2 Books
TL;DR: You ALREADY have the resources you need to succeed at whatever you want to pursue.
Could you write and publish a book in 30 days? Could you publish a 2nd book in those same 30 days? That’s the challenge I gave myself and I got it done this past December.
The key was realizing that I already possessed the resources necessary to accomplish my goal. That’s when I also realized that for anything we want to accomplish in life that we already have what we need to be successful.
Of course, it wasn’t that simple of a realization. Let me walk you through my lessons learned and drop some more knowledge and articles below.
How to publish 2 books or do anything big in 30 Days or Less
Every Friday, I check in with Allyson Lewis, who is a best selling author (130,000 copies sold — visit her website: https://the7minutelife.com/), and I help her think about how to transform her business. Overtime, our meeting has shifted to empowering and challenging each other. On Friday, December 2nd, 2022, she challenged me to write and publish a book in 30 days based upon my thinking and prior writing on increasing personal and professional performance.
Takeaway: Surrounded myself great people that will challenge you and you them.
I initially rejected the idea, because I had already gone down the path of trying to physically publish a book in the past (like 10 times) and found the self-publishing support systems to be hard to use and expensive. Even more so, I had invested in a self-publishing startup to try to make it easier and that business failed. So I had a lot of experience telling me this would be hard — and take longer than 30 days. But it turns out I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I asked Allyson with my prior lessons in mind, why she was so confident that I could write and publish a book in 30 days. She pointed me to a system that had the easiest possible path way (and cheapest) to print a book. So she overcame all my objections including cost because I asked. Allyson had published many books and I should have asked sooner. The knowledge was there.
Takeaway: The knowledge was fully accessible the whole time. I should have ask for help and gotten curious sooner.
With my objections overcome, I took on the challenge to write and publish a book in 30 days. I reviewed my prior written notes and went to work writing. Along the way I learned about ISBN numbers and relied on a friend who was an editor to review the book after I wrote it. Allyson offered up her services to get some cover art done. And before you knew I had a new book. The resources for success were around me the whole time. I just didn’t know it.
Takeaway: You already have everything you need around you to be successful in any field of your choice.
But where did the second book come from. Well as you heard I had try to self-publish a book before so I already had the content for the second book. I just needed to update it, get an ISBN, get some cover art, and move it through the print and publishing process. So why not get two books to the finish line?
Takeaway: 2X turns out to be pretty easy.
If I were to ask you to publish and print 2 books in 30 days, you could do it and you’d follow the steps I took above. You would inventory what you had to write about including prior writings and assets for getting the goal done. You would fill in knowledge gaps from the people around you. You would tap into your existing resources to make the journey easier. You’d ask for help instead of waiting on the sidelines. And then you’d get to work on the first book, noting that the first one would be the hardest with the steepest learning curve.
You can apply all these lessons to anything in life. As I wrote last month’s email:
“Set big goals. Take extraordinary action. Get above average results. Accept no retreat. When you shoot for average you get less than average. When we shoot for extraordinary, even when we fall short we will be above average.”
What will you 2X or 10X in 30 days?
Want a copy of my new book?
I wrote this book in December and it is at the printer. Would you like a copy? Let me know by dropping me an email at [email protected].
Here is a brief introductory excerpt:
It's time to realize that success is a decision, winning is choice, and that it all boils down to personal transformation.
I’ve compiled my hard-earned lessons in self-awareness and self-transformation into the succinct lessons and philosophies of this book to help you get on a pathway for growth and impact.
A life can go unlived in so many ways. That ends today for you and me.
Warren Buffet on Being the World’s Best Lover: Internal vs External Score Cards
Warren Buffett had a great example for understanding the difference between and the importance of internal and external scorecards. He asks (paraphrased): “Would you rather be the world’s best lover and known as the worst or be the world’s worst lover and known as the best?”
An outer scorecard is when you base your success on what others think about you. Others decide what success looks like for you.
An inner scorecard is when you play your own game and decide on what success looks like for yourself. You play by your own rules and you improve on your own terms regardless of what the outside world thinks or believes is right.
The main problem we all face is that the media, those around us, and even our parents and teachers shaped and raised us to value the outer scorecard. The inner scorecard turns out to be the most important for happiness and extraordinary achievement. You have to cast aside the external scorecard of others.
“The big question about how people behave is whether they’ve got an Inner Scorecard or an Outer Scorecard. It helps if you can be satisfied with an Inner Scorecard.”
— Warren Buffett
